To Kill a Mockingbird

I hope everyone had a great weekend! Ours was interesting.

I must tell you that Knox got his first kill on Friday. He was sunbathing outside when a mockingbird swooped down to torment him and he caught it and ate it. Yes, he ate the entire bird. There were just a few feathers scattered throughout the yard. Disgusting, right. We were proud, but completely grossed out at the same time. Can you believe this innocent, little creature killed something? We spent the weekend at the lake. It was great and the weather was perfect. I'll have pictures of Knox swimming later.

And if you're asking, is that a car seat? Yes, Knox rides in a car seat. He loves it because he can look out and it's super comfy. We've spoiled him so much that he loves to ride in our laps, but this is the first trip he made in the car seat. We put him in the middle of the backseat and he could see everything.

Only 13 more days until the Running of the Weenies!!! Knox is ready!

Happy 2 Year Engagement Anniversary!

I can't believe it was two years ago today that Fred and I got engaged. Time flies!
I had a co-worker take our picture when we got to work this morning. :)

The story of our engagement:
Fred and I were on vacation in Gulf Shores, Alabama with my parents, grandfather and friend, Mason. We went to eat dinner at this restaurant called LuLu's (it's owned by Jimmy Buffett's sister). Fred and Mason wanted to go to the restaurant a little early to get our name on the list; so, I decided to go with them. Fred kept asking me if I wanted to go out to the dock, but I kept telling him no because I didn't want to go (clearly, I had no idea). So, when my parents got there, we got a table and were seated. After our drinks were served, Fred proposed a toast and thanked my family for the vacation. Well, the toast led into a proposal. I knew he had the ring, but a week before he told me not to get my hopes up because he wasn't going to propose on vacation. Obviously, I said yes and we're living happily ever after...

Here are some pictures of our engagement (my, how we've changed):To Fred: You're my best friend and I love you with all of my heart. Thank you for the best life!! XOXO

Get Well Soon

UPDATE: Like father, like son. Knox has allergies. He's on a generic of Zyrtec. Thanks for all of your kind words!

Our little boy has the sniffles today and he's been sneezing a lot lately. We're taking him to the vet this afternoon. I think he just has allergies just like his daddy. He's been acting normal, but I can tell his sinuses are bothering him. I hope he feels better soon.

This was a picture of him this morning. He had burried himself in the pillows on the bed. Silly, boy!!

Breed of Intelligence

I have to disagree with a recent study I heard about on the news. The dachshund is ranked 49 on the list of intelligent dogs. I guess that could be worse, but some moron decided that there were 48 breeds of dogs smarter than my child. Since Fred and I don't have any "human" children yet, I have to brag on our smart boy...

Knox has learned how to jump on the bed, knock the pillows off and get underneath the covers when he's ready for some quiet time. Pretty impressive, huh? (This picture was taken before he un-made the bed I just made) Knox loves to sunbathe. He gets this from his mommy. He takes one of the cords from the blinds and throws it against the window to let us know he wants to go outside. Smart!!
Last night, Fred and I were walking Knox and he found a piece of cardboard. You would have thought this was the best toy ever. He carried it all the way home (which is about 3 blocks). It was like giving a kid a refrigerator box to play with.

I don't have a picture of this, but Knox knows how to open the pantry door (this is where his treats are). The other day, he opened the door and managed to lock himself in there. We have to work on opening the door from the other side.

Dachshunds are known for being badger dogs and for being manipulative (which Knox is). He makes these cute little faces and I feel like I have to give him a treat. I thought my will-power was stronger. He even does this one trick where he stands on his hind legs and balances. I can't ever get to the camera fast enough to snap a picture.

But wait, because I think he's so much smarter than most dogs, does that make me dumb??

FYI...Knox is in training for the wiener dog race in September!!! Stay tuned.

Weekend Wrap-Up

♥My two favorite boys♥

Knox trying to play with the BIG dogs

Weekend Wrap-Up:
On Friday, we had dinner with Fred's family. His mom cooked chimichangas and enchiladas. They were delicious. On Saturday, we took Knox for a walk, ran errands and had a nice dinner at Carrabba's. We walked around the outdoor mall (since the weather was so nice) after dinner. On Sunday, we went to church and then my mom and I went to a jewelry and gift show. It was so nice to have a GIRLS ONLY afternoon. Last night, I made dinner for our neighbors, Mark and Megan, who just had their second child. We stopped by to drop off the food and meet little Jake. He's adorable. We had a great weekend. How about you?

Splash of Color

Happy Friday, y'all!! Tonight we're heading to my in-laws for dinner. I am thankful because my MIL is not cooking roast. She loves to cook roast for guests and I absolutely despise roast. Does anyone else hate roast or something their MIL insists on cooking all of the time?

As you've seen from my "Show Us Where You Live" posts, every room in our house is painted the exact same color. I love the tan/beige color, but after seeing it for a year and a half in every, single room, I think I need a change. It may not be soon, but one day. I don't even know which room we'd start in.

So, I saw this yesterday at In this wonderful life... and I had to check it out. It's the Benjamin Moore app for the iPhone. It's absolutely free. How it works: You take a picture of a color that you like and the app will match the color with a paint color they have.
(Sorry this isn't the best picture of my highlighter, but I do love the "peony" color)

If you're looking for paint colors, this is a great thing to try. I hope everyone has a great weekend!!! It's supposed to be BEAUTIFUL here!

Neighborhood Court

So, tonight I get to go to "neighborhood court". Well, that's what I am calling it anyway. Remember my HOA woes? Well, some people in my neighborhood are crazy.

My neighbor, across the street, is being sued by their next door neighbor because the neighbor feels as though their roof for their outdoor kitchen will collapse and hit his house.

First, there is NOOO freaking way! This man is crazy!!! Second, this structure was built in fall of 2007 (before we moved in) and they received a permit for it on October 18, 2007. They are requesting a variance of 4.5” so that they do not have to alter the porch. They've invited the whole neighborhood over to see the structure for themselves.

So, I am going tonight (since Fred will be working late) to tell the board that this is a very nice structure and is in no way harmful to anyone.

On a side note: These neighbors are super nice. They invite us over for drinks and food all of the time. They have a pool and they also invite us over to use that. Their pool and outdoor kitchen are first class!! They have the best looking yard (their grass is like golf course grass). And their house always looks great!!

Why do people have to be so crazy?!! Get a life!

Aunt Caroline

I just found out that my best friend, Laura, and her husband, Josh, are going to be having a little GIRL!!!! I am so excited for them! Laura is going to be such a great mother! Little Miss Leah is scheduled to be born January 6, 2010. Another ADPi Legacy in the making!!!

Unfortunately, Josh and Laura live in Detroit, but with technology, we're never that far apart!! Congratualtions Josh and Laura!!!!

Dress Code

Can you believe these people who are outraged about Michelle Obama wearing shorts?? So what if she's the First Lady. She has the right to wear shorts. She went to the Grand Canyon with her children for crying out loud in the middle of August. I too would wear shorts and perhaps even a tank top.

I do not care for Michelle personally, but I do like her style. I see nothing wrong with this picture.

Oh, and why researching for this post, I found another article "bashing" her for wearing a Merona dress from Target. I am a firm believer in wearing what's cute and comfortable. Who cares where it came from?!

I am not a fan of this particular dress, but I do like some of the other Merona dresses at Target. Since I like her style, at least I'll be able to go out and purchase it. Unlike when most famous people wear $300 t-shirts.

We do not live in a country where women have to cover their arms, legs or hair. This is a free country and as long as you're dressed age appropriate and you aren't showing too much skin, you're fine.

I work in a leisure industry and we can wear shorts, sneakers, t-shirts, etc. and I love it!!!

Do you think it's ok for the First Lady to wear shorts and a dress from Target?

What to Bring???

I am so glad to see that I am not the only one who has had HOA issues. It just really makes me mad.

So, one of my good neighbors, Megan, had a healthy, baby boy yesterday. His name is Jacob. He's adorable!!! Megan and her husband, Mark, also have a 2 year old son, Joshua.

I volunteered to bring them dinner on Sunday, but I don't know what to cook. Do you have any ideas of what to take a family who just had a baby? They're getting chicken enchiladas on Friday and lasagna on Saturday. I need help!!!

Thanks in advance!!!

HOA Woes

A picture of our house before we bought it

Fred and I live in a very nice subdivision. Our part of the subdivision is gated and we pay HOA (Homeowners' Association) dues. Fred and I always pay on time and in full (this will come into play a little later on).

Now, the other night, our HOA board members had a meeting and one item in particular was voted on that has really "ruffled my feathers". (that's me putting it VERY nicely)

We have this one house in our neighborhood that is in foreclosure. The people never really kept a nice yard when they lived there (it was a minister from Minnesota's mistress and her no good teenagers) and they nor the bank have done a damn thing since they moved out. So, the house looks terrible. There are weeds that are about 2 feet high. But, we've heard that someone is very close to purchasing the house.

So, the HOA decided to use OUR dues to pay to have the property cleaned. This was not something that was voted on by the homeowners, but the board took it upon themselves to approve. Now, this makes me mad. Why should my dues go to pay to clean someone else's yard? I don't even do my own yard. We have a yard guy. So, should I just fire him and not mow my grass or pull weeds? Won't the HOA take care of me too?

It just blows my mind. At one point, they wanted to do a neighborhood clean up day of the yard. Again, we don't even do our own yard. Why would we go and do someone else's yard?

People are so concerned about the way the house looks. Who cares? I just tell people who come into the neighborhood that the house is in foreclosure and they say, "Oh, ok" and go on about their business. It just pisses me off! And I thought they said that it was close to being purchased. Obviously the potential home buyer isn't worried about its appearance.

Now if this were an elderly person or a disabled person, I wouldn't mind helping. But, I refuse to help people who don't help themselves.

And then yesterday the wonderful HOA sent out an email with a list of those who were delinquent on their dues and our names were on there! I was furious. I called the management company who handles our finances to make sure they had received our check and they had on August 1. So, why in the world is "SMITHWICK, FRED AND CAROLINE" on the list????? I don't want the whole neighborhood thinking that I don't pay my bills because I do. Ugh, HOA's!!!!

Creatures of Habit

Fred and I are creatures of habit. We like to eat at the same restaurants over and over and we order the exact same thing. This is mostly my fault because I am such a picky eater.

Well, Saturday night, we decided that we would try our "old" sushi restaurant. We haven't been there in about a year. This was because we discovered our "new" sushi restaurant and the food is much better plus they mail out coupons. The only reason we went to our "new" one was because of the coupons. And it was love at first bite!

Our "old" sushi restaurant was quite disappointing. We ordered our "old" regular and it just wasn't the same. The rolls seemed smaller and they didn't have much flavor. Plus, they didn't have shrimp fried rice. (an absolute must with your sushi) We were sad and even talked about leaving the "old" one and going to the "new" one, but we just went home and pigged out on brownies.

We decided last night for dinner that we were going to go to our "new" sushi place since we'd been craving it after the disaster. It was worth the wait and it was delicious and about $15 cheaper (I had a coupon). We also knew that we could get in and out in time to watch "Big Brother" at a reasonable time.

Has anyone else done this or are we the only weirdos?

Big Brother - Spoiler Alert

Dear Big Brother Producers,

I think we all know by now who's left the house for good. This "incident" happened on Friday night. Two nights ago!!!

But, tonight, you neglected to show what went down in the house. You are now dragging out the suspicion. I cannot wait until Tuesday. I wanted to find out all of the drama tonight. Do you not realize that everyone knows? It's all over the internet.

And my husband and I were patiently waiting for your show to come on, but it was delayed by the stupid golf tournament. Doesn't your network know "Big Brother" is more important than ANY golf game?

We already know that there has been another HOH competition and two other people are nominated for eviction. We also knew that there was going to be a double eviction this week, but you went ahead and took care of that last Friday.

Could you please keep up with the time and show us what happened on Friday? That was two days ago and I think you had ample time to edit and compose a compelling episode for Sunday's show.

If you're going to make us wait, please show EVERYTHING on Tuesday. Extend the episode, if you must.

Thank you.

If you don't know what has happened, check it out here.

Show Us Your Life: Favorite Vacation Spots

It's Friday and it's time for "Show Us Your Life" hosted by Kelly's Korner! This week's feature: Favorite Vacation Spots.

1. My favorite city in the entire world is Rome, Italy. I did a study abroad in college and I fell in love with Rome. I've been there four times and I just can't get enough of the history, food and culture. I am hoping to take Fred one day since he's never been.

2. Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Hawaiian island, Kona. This resort was awesome. You either take a boat, a tram or walk a mile to your room. The ocean views were spectacular and it was a blast!

3. Hilton Rose Hall (Montego Bay, Jamacia): This was my first all-inclusive resort and I absolutely loved it! The food was great. The people were awesome (especially Cool Billy).

This waterfall was used in the James Bond film "Live and Let Die"

The house behind us is Johnny Cash's house

4. Palm Springs, California: When I was growing up, my family and I would go to Palm Springs for Spring Break. I love the desert with the view of the mountains.

5. Zermatt, Switzerland: This is one of the most interesting places I have ever been. There aren't any cars. The only vehicles are those little electric cars to take you to and from.
The Matterhorn

We love to travel. Fred and I are hoping to take a vacation later this year. Fred's top five would be a lot different from mine. He's been to Bora Bora and several other exotic places. Happy Friday, everyone!

I'm Getting Old

Well, I made Fred take the love language quiz (we took one on Facebook) last night and his result was physical touch. It's good to know that's how he responds to love. Last night, we kind of made it a joke and I would rub his arm and he would hand me the remote as a "gift". I know, we're corny! But, we're in love! (insert ooh's and ah's here)

If you're interested in reading the book where all of this comes from, it's called "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman. It's a great way to learn about your special someone.

So, this morning I get an email titled: "BHS c/o 2000 10 Year Reunion". Ahhh! Yes, I graduated from high school in 2000; so, it's only been 9 years, but we've got to start planning. Since I was a class officer in high school, I am part of the planning committee. It's just hard for me to think it's been that long since I was in high school. It feels like it was just a few years ago.

My high school experience was great. I was on the dance team, a class officer, and an honor roll student (sorry, had to brag). But, it's definitely not something I'd want to go back and relive again.

I guess, since I am part of the planning committee, I should go to the reunion. With all of the social networking sites today, do people really care about class reunions? I pretty much can find out anything I want to know about anyone who graduated with me. Are people really willing to pay $40 to have awkward conversations over a span of two days when they can find out anything for free on Facebook? Have any of you been to your reunions? What are your thoughts?

Girl, you have a lot to learn...

Love Language

Thanks again for the get well wishes. I am feeling much better today. I haven't taken any medicine today because I don't like how it makes me feel, but I am feeling ok without it.

So, has anyone ever taken one of those quizzes to see what their "love language" is? I did and I can't say that I am surprised by the result.

I speak...
Gift Receiving
It says..."Some mates respond well to visual symbols of love. If you speak this love language, you are more likely to treasure any gift as an expression of love and devotion. People who speak this love language often feel that a lack of gifts represents a lack of love from their mate. Luckily, this love language is one of the easiest to learn.

If you want to become an effective gift giver, many mates will have to learn to change their attitude about money. If you are naturally a spender, you will have no trouble buying gifts for your mate. However, a person who is used to investing and saving their money may have a tough time adjusting to the concept of spending money as an expression of love. These people must understand that you are investing the money not in gifts, but in deepening your relationship with your mate.

The gift of self is an important symbol of love. Sometimes all your mate desires is for someone to be there for them, going through the same trials and experiencing the same things. Your body can become a very powerful physical symbol of love.

These gifts need not to come every day, or even every week. They don’t even need to cost a lot of money. Free, frequent, expensive, or rare, if your mate relates to the language of receiving gifts, any visible sign of your love will leave them feeling happy and secure in your relationship."

This isn't the first time I've taken this quiz and I got the same result. I was the only person in the room who got this language. Does this make me a materialistic person? A bad person?

It is right on the dot about me. I do love gifts even gifts of affection. I can't wait for Fred to take the quiz.

Have you taken this quiz? If so, what is your love language? (now you have to say "love language" in your most seductive voice)

P.S. It's exactly four months from my birthday!!! In case you wanted to start shopping for me now. ;)

Cough, Cough, Sneeze, Sneeze

Thank you for all of your get well wishes. I came down with this summer cold on Friday and it seems to get worse and worse. I am taking medicine, like a good girl. My drugs of choice: I wish I could take the nighttime medicine all of the time. I sleep like a baby.

I can't go to the doctor because we're in the middle of getting our insurance changed. And for some reason, they can't give us the new group number or identification numbers. They hope to have it all finalized by the end of the week. (they better because I need to pick up a VERY important prescription by Sunday so that Baby Smithwick doesn't come sooner than planned) Too much information...I know.

Tylenol usually doesn't have any side effects on me, but this time, it's a little different. I felt kinda funny yesterday, almost as if I was drugged. It was a warm, tingly feeling, but not the good kind. I had a headache and my vision was blurry. It was scary, but it did make me feel better. I can't take Sudafed at night because I wake up every hour. It's terrible because Sudafed really works.

I also feel like a criminal each time I go to buy cold medicine because they take a copy of your license and ask you to sign. Sometimes I just want to ask if they'd like one of my snotty Kleenex's to prove that I am sick. Ugh, why do criminals have to make it so difficult for the people who actually need the medicine?

Fred wouldn't let me drive or go work out yesterday. Both of which I didn't need to be doing. So, last night he was sweet enough to make us a BBQ chicken pizza and to watch "Obsessed" with me. (I liked the movie even if Beyonce drives me nuts!)
I'm feeling better today, but still not 100%. I think it's going to be a few more days before I am back to my old self. I have a feeling that tonight will be stuffed peppers, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Big Brother. There's nothing better than stupid movies when you're sick!
As a little pick me up, I bought myself a new bottle of Fiji Water (the best water):
Thanks again for your sweet comments!!

Social Butterfly Award

I was awarded the Social Butterfly Award by the Future Mrs. H at Think Happy Thoughts Thank you so much for the cute award!
Now, I am going to award this to....
A Girl Can Dream

I will post something later on today. Thanks for all of your get well wishes. I hate being sick!

Under the Weather

This weekend, Fred, Knox and I went to the lake with my family. Our trip was shorter than we had anticipated. We got there Friday night, spent most of yesterday lounging around the lake house and returned home early this morning.

Here are a couple of pictures from our two hours spent on the boat:
Willie and Knox were begging for treats. (Knox is on the floor of the boat)
Knox loves to drive the boat.

Being sick is not fun, but I have enjoyed lounging around and watching television with Fred and Knox all afternoon. Hopefully, the bug will leave our house soon.

I hope your weekend was better than our's.

Show Us Your Life: Wedding Reception and Honeymoon

This week's feature for Show Us Your Life at Kelly's Korner is reception pictures and honeymoon pictures.

As you know, Fred and I were married on April 5, 2008. This was the same day as the Final Four game for the University of Memphis basketball team. Our wedding was at 5:30pm and the tip off was at 5:40pm. At our reception, we decided to have a big screen tv there for all of the guests to watch. Fred and I actually had to wait to enter our own reception until after the game was over. Memphis ended up winning that evening, but lost in the championship game. Everyone loved the televisions and they still talk about them today.

My cake (strawberry cake with chocolate filling):
Fred's cake (a replica of the Univ. of Tennessee basketball court and white cake with bavarian creme filling):
The UT boys singing "Rocky Top":
My friends from high school (one of my fave pics and do you see the tv in the background?):
The garter:
My sorority sisters gathered around me to sing (an ADPi tradition):
Leaving for our new life together:
Fred and I went to the Hawaiian island of Kauai for our honeymoon. It's the rainy island, but we had great weather. We took a helicopter ride, a boat ride, went snorkeling (something I don't ever care to do again) and we spent our last day on the island of Oahu. We had a great time! We'd definitely go back. Here are just a few pictures of our honeymoon:

Helicopter ride in Kauai:
Catamaran ride in Kauai:

I hope you enjoyed our wedding. We did!
