Baby Mania

How We Told the Parents:

Fred and I are both close with our families. We decided to tell them the day we found out since I was leaving for Phoenix the next day.

First, we went to my parents house. My dad was out of town; so, I had to call him and tell him on the phone. I gave my mom a sack of stuff and as she was ruffling through it she pulled out a pregnancy test. At first she thought it was a marker, but then realized what it was and said. My grandfather and mom were so excited as was my poor dad on the phone.

We then went to Fred's parents house. I started out by showing his mom some pictures from the NKOTBSB concert and then it went to a picture of the positive pregnancy tests. She squealed. She immediately showed it to his dad and they were so excited!

If we'd had more time, we probably would have done something a little more fun, but as you know, we can't keep secrets!

Doctors Visits:

My trip to Phoenix was the longest four days of my life. I had to wait until that next Monday for our first ultrasound. Fred and I were both on pins and needles.

Not only did I know that I was pregnant, but I had been informed that I had Factor V Leiden (a blood clotting disorder). I was told that I'd have to begin taking Heparin shots twice a day until delivery and then for 6 weeks after delivery. I was scared. Most women don't find out about this until they have miscarried. My doctor had only checked for this since I had a family history for blood clots. This made the wait even more excruciating.

We had our first ultrasound on June 27, 2011. I was 5 weeks and 5 days.

Everything looked great with the baby and I learned how to inject myself with the shots. {I used to be the kid they had to hold down, but now I'm a big girl.}

After the ultrasound, we went to dinner at Pei Wei Asian Diner. After dinner we opened our fourtune cookies and this is what we found:
Kinda ironic, huh? Now, I just wonder if Baby Smithwick is a boy. Fred and I do plan on finding out the sex of the baby as soon as we can.

On July 6, we had another ultrasound to make sure Baby Smithwick was doing great. I had some pain and spotting, but they found that it was just fluid. Praise the Lord! I was 7 weeks 1 day.

And on July 11, we saw Baby Smithwick again. I was measuring 7 weeks 5 days.

Isn't it amazing how fast they grow? I have another ultrasound scheduled for July 25 and I couldn't be more excited I'll be almost 10 weeks then. Just a 1/4 of the way to meeting our baby!

This is so exciting! I usually just laugh at my fortune cookie messages, but you and Fred got two great ones that I'm sure you will put in the baby book.

Such exciting news! I'm so happy they caught your Factor 5 - my SIL has this, too, and had to do the shots during her pregnancy. The one good thing about it - you'll get a million ultrasound pictures! Congrats again and enjoy this time! That sweet baby will be here before you know it!

Yay! How exciting! I can only imagine how great it feels to get a positive pregnancy test after waiting for so long. I, too, have always been the girl that had to be held down when the needle came out..or picked up off of the floor, but when you are trying to become a mother, that fear just goes away. Our first round of IVF, my husband did my first injection, and had to be gone around shot time on day 2..So I had to be a big girl and I decided it was so much easier for me to just do them myself! It may be a mental thing, but it hurts less when you do it yourself

I found out that I have a protein C deficiency and borderline APA disorder (both clotting disorders) in February. We found out after we lost our baby at 11 weeks in November. It's nice to know that someone else will have to take Heparin shots during pregnancy because I'm just surrounded by normal pregnant women =). You'll have to let me know how the shots go and any pointers b/c I am deathly afraid of needles! Congrats again!

We did the slipping-in-the-pregnancy-test with pictures for our first pregnancy! I've always loved that idea, cause it's so unsuspecting.

I have a form of thrombophilia (PAI), so I take Lovenox in my belly each day. The shots aren't bad, huh?!....well, once you get used to them!

So excited!!

C, I have the same clotting disorder! We found out... well, actually my family found out while I was in a coma after I got sick. It's definitely good that you found out so soon! I had to take Heparin shots twice a day after I went into cardiac arrest in 2008. Where are you having to inject them? I had to inject mine in my tummy & it was awful. The shots didn't bother me (I'm sure you can imagine I have an extremely high pain tolerance) but the area I was injecting got to be so tender. My whole tummy turned black b/c it was so bruised. So, I feel for you on those shots. I only had to do mine for a month so I can't imagine 9 months! And on the sex of the baby, I TOTALLY see you having a girl. From the moment I found out that's the first thing I thought. I'll obviously be happy for you no matter what baby Smithwick turns out to be. Looking forward to seeing all the updates on your journey. Love you!
