Sneaky, Sneaky

I got a little sneaky last week.  In my quest for trying to be healthier, I thought I remembered seeing something on Pinterest about using Greek yogurt as a substitute for eggs and oil in a cake and brownie recipe.  So, of course, I looked back through my pins and found it!
So, I decided to give it a try without telling anyone.  I used a box of Ghiradelli Double Chocolate Brownie Mix (yum---my favorite), 1 6oz. Fage Greek yogurt and 1/4 cup of water.

Well, at least the batter looked the same...
And I cooked the brownies like the package said and they came out looking "normal"...
They were quite gooey, but I did notice a slight aftertaste.  Fred agreed that there was something missing.

So, I guess being sneaky doesn't always pay off and sometimes there's nothing just like the real thing.  Next time, I'll stick with the eggs and oil.

Have you ever tried something like this?  If so, did it work?   Did they notice?

yes...eggs aren't really the prob...i've used applesauce in place of the oil...i can always tell the difference...my theory...just go for it if you're eating sweets...haha

I have to cook with egg substitutes daily since Brentley has an egg allergy. I have found that unsweetened applesauce works best with baking sweets. 1/4 cup= 1 egg

They tend to not rise as well though.

I've never noticed a difference when I use unsweetened applesauce; I've never tried the Greek yogurt. I'm always looking for ways to be sneaky too! One time I tried canned pumpkin - and, well, Owen caught on to me with that one :)

I tried using greek yogurt instead of sour cream in some enchiladas I found out pinterest and they weren't horrible but they had kind of a sweet taste to them that normal enchiladas don't have. I say if you are going with sweets just go all out :)

I've tried the greek yogurt thing with brownies and mine also came out with an aftertaste. Not sure if there is a solution there. Although pumpkin or applesauce usually work quite well?

I put pureed spinach in brownies once. No one noticed except Justin. His taste buds are like no other.

This is going to sound gross, but I used a black bean brownie recipe I found on Pinterest. Puree the black beans from a can and sub those in for the eggs and oil. Actually came out so moist and I can't taste the difference and I HATE beans, lol, so that says a lot.

I was going to say the applesauce one that Laura said. I think we did it for cookies and it wasn't bad.

I've heard of using black beans as a substitute, never tried it but could be good? I'd rather just eat the real deal personally. I love brownies.

I used applesauce all the time and usually can't tell a difference.

I tried Dr Oz's recommendation and replaced the oil with pumpkin puree. My kids & husband never noticed! ;)

You can mix a devils food cake mix with one can of pumpkin and make muffins! They are pretty good :)

The pumpkin muffins are awesome...I even add some choc chips. I used a yellow cake mix. I also saw on pinterest where you can substitute...I think a 7up for the liquid...but I think that was for cookies. Just do what I do and run a little more or bike and drink water and it all cancels out....right:)

I've heard of this! I'm glad you tried it and can warn us all now so I don't do the same thing :)

Good to know. Some substitutes are fantastic, others just don't cut it! I tried greek yogurt instead of tahini to make hummus... it was disgusting. I LOVE your blog. Newest follower!

Well that's good to know. I am one of those that if I'm going to have something sweet it had better be worth it. At least you tried!

I have made cupcakes using substitutes. Instead of using oil, I used applesauce. Instead of using eggs, I used egg whites or egg substitutes. It tasted exactly the same, if not better. You couldn't tell a difference!

Good for you for trying something new...even if you ended up just wanting the real thing. :) I'm always way too scared to try the healthier version of ingredients b/c if I'm going wiht sweets, I'm going all the way!
