Training Week 9: Graduating from 5K to 10K Training

With the 5K completed, I decided that there was no time like the present to jump in and start training for a 10K.  Now, the next 10K isn't until mid-May, but I want to go ahead and start preparing myself.

Fred and I even talked about running in one 5K during the months of March, April and May just to get used to running in actual races as opposed to running against ourselves.  We're hoping this will help us with our 5K times as well as training for the 10K.

Here's my training schedule for the week:

Sunday 2/26:  Rest
Monday 2/27: Pure Barre class
Tuesday 2/28: Week 1, Day 1 Bridge to 10K (4.00 miles)
Wednesday 2/29: 2 miles on the treadmill and 3.5 with running club  Total:  5.5 miles
Thursday 3/1: Rest
Friday 3/2: Pure Barre class
Saturday 3/3: Week 1, Day 3 Bridge to 10K

On Wednesday, after I'd already run 2 miles on the treadmill, I found out via Twitter that a local running store, Breakaway,  has a running group who runs on Wednesday nights.  I called Fred and we decided to go and try it out.  The weather couldn't have been more perfect for a trail run.
We were a little scared, but it was great to run with a group.  We were in the intermediate group and last night we ran 3.5 miles in 38 minutes.  This will be a great tool for 10K race training and a little something different.    It was an awesome and we can't wait to go back next Wednesday.

I am loving this journey that we are on and I just keep praying that we both stay physically healthy throughout the process.

Do you have any tips or tricks for running a 10K?

I ran my first 10K last year and the best thing is running consistently each week and building your mileage up. I based my mileage on this plan and it worked great! http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51122/10-K-Training-Guide-Novice-Program

I used his plan for my first half marathon too. Let me know if you have any questions!! Oh, and I'm an ADPi alum too! MTSU

You could run the 5K with me at the end of this month! Although you'd probably beat me to the finish line :) I have my eyes on a 10K in June; the route takes you through Davies Plantation.

so proud of you!!! (and envious at the same time)...i cannot wait to start running again.

just make sure to keep track of your mileage and plenty of H20--that's the biggest thing! not to mention plenty of fun tunes to keep your mind occupied

That's insane! I would love to have that level of strength and endurance someday. I'm definitely nowhere near it yet, but good for you! And it's awesome that you two do this together, what a fun way to bond?
