Thursday Training: Road Race Series

Forget what I said about not running any races this summer.  I've signed up to participate in the Memphis Runners Track Club's 2012 Road Race Series.

The series consists of TWO 5Ks, TWO 5-milers, TWO 10Ks, TWO 10-Milers, and TWO half marathons.  Have I lost my mind???
My goal right now is to complete one of each of the races, but if I feel like it, I might just run two half marathons.  The series takes place during July through November.  I feel like this is a great way to work towards my goal of running a half marathon and improving my running capabilities.

You know I'll be tracking it all here.

Have you done something similar to this?  Any advice or encouragement is welcome.

A BIG Thank You & Giveaway Winner Announced

I cannot say thank you enough for the abundant amount of support, love and prayers that all of you have bestowed upon our us with our adoption announcement.

Many of you have provided us with family adoption stories, agency names, websites to visit and names of others who have been through the adoption process.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Also, if you know of anyone considering adoption for their child, please let us know.  We've been encouraged to be as open about this as possible because it could potentially put us in contact with a birth mother and ultimately our child.

Yesterday, we found out that the first part of our home study is scheduled for next Friday, July 6.  The tentative timeline for this is 45-60 days.  I warned the social worker that I move like lightning!  Now, we're officially on our way to becoming parents!  And isn't it amazing how it's all coming together?!

We look forward to the day when we can introduce our beautiful baby to all of you!  But, in the meantime, we look forward to sharing our adoption journey with you!
And before I forget, the winner of my 1000 Post Giveaway is:

#121 Kara

Congratulations!

A New Beginning....

As you know, we began our journey to parenthood over 2 1/2 years ago.  To say this road hasn't been easy for us would be an understatement.

Earlier this month, we began the IVF process.  Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful.  But, we have one frozen embryo that we can use within the next two years.

Where do we go from here?

We've prayed about it and we feel that God is leading us in a new direction...

We are so excited to announce that we are ADOPTING!
We are in the very beginning stages of the adoption process.  We're currently looking into adopting a newborn domestically.  We know we could love and provide for ANY child.  We also know this process could take us anywhere from several months to a few years to finally bring home our bundle of joy, but we are just so excited.

The whole adoption process seems so overwhelming right now; so, if you have any words of advice or encouragement, please send them our way.

God has blessed us in so many areas of our lives and we know that he will continue to do so as we strive to create our little family.  We just can't wait to meet our beautiful son or daughter!

Monday's Musings

Happy Monday, everyone!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend.

We went to the lake this weekend and I think I'm still on lake time; so, I'm going to have Pinterest do a little thinking for me this beautiful, sunny morning! Here are some of my favorite quotes on there right now:

Enjoy!

Summer Nights

One of my favorite things to do in Memphis is to go to the Live at the Garden concert series at the Botanic Gardens. You can bring in your own food and drink and listen to great live music!  So, that's my inspiration for today's Fashion Friday...

Training Thursday: At Home Workouts

With the temperatures getting hotter, it's a lot harder to find a good time to workout outside.  So, here are three of my favorite videos to do inside where I can have a fan blowing on me and my A/C cranked high:

Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred
I've blogged about this DVD several times.  It's one of my absolute favorites.  There are 3 workouts in this DVD and they all incorporate a warm up, a cool down, cardio and strength training all within 30 minutes.  You break a sweat!  Each level is designed to increase with your stamina and strength, but I think level 2 is harder than level 3.  This is a great DVD to just throw in when you're limited, but need to get in a quick workout.

Jillian Michaels' Yoga Meltdown
Like the 30 Day Shred, this DVD only has 30-minute workouts.  This is perfect for yoga beginners and those who know a little something about the exercise.  It will leave you sore, but coming back for more.  This DVD is perfect for your strength training/stretching days. But don't let the word "yoga" fool you, you'll still break a sweat!

Bob Harper's Yoga for Warriors
Just because Bob "seems" sweet on tv, doesn't mean he's really that sweet to workout with!  This DVD is a little more for the person who knows a little something about yoga.  It's also an hour long workout.  You will definitely feel the burn of yoga and get a better idea of how a real yoga class is.  This DVD makes me break out in a sweat in the first two minutes, but I love it!

And if you can't "do" videos, you can always try Carrie Underwood's card trick found here

What are some of your favorite "at home" workouts?

{Book Review} The Fame Game

I must be on a roll. Two books in two weeks. Wow!
I decided to start reading Lauren Conrad's The Fame Game because I had previously enjoyed her L.A. Candy series.  This book is a "spin-off" of the L.A. Candy series.

If you've read those, you may remember evil Madison and ditzy Gaby from L.A. Candy, but there are two new-comers,  Carmen - an aspiring actress with Hollywood royalty in her blood and Kate - an aspiring singer from Ohio.  I really wish Gaby would have been written out.  I get that she's a filler, but c'mon. I still think about who these characters are "loosely" based on.

I have to admit that there are a lot of similarities between all of the books.  I'm sure I'll read the sequel to this one when it comes out in October, but they're all a bit predictable.  It's definitely an easy, fun beach read.

If you're going to read this book, start with the entire L.A. Candy series.  You will be a little lost not knowing the full back history, but then again maybe it's more entertaining coming in to this series.

What I didn’t like about this book: It was predictable.

What I liked about this book: It was an easy read and I like cheesy, girly books.

Who would enjoy this book?
Anyone who likes Lauren Conrad and her L.A. Candy series.

What type of read is it? Easy, light read.

Would I recommend this book? It's easy and great for a summer read.  But cheesy, girly books MUST be your thing!

Dads Rock

Happy Monday!
I hope all of you had another wonderful weekend. Why does the time always fly by?

The majority of our weekend was spent running our usual errands and doing things around the house, But like most families, we celebrated Father's Day yesterday with my grandfather and Fred's dad. I am so blessed to have so many wonderful men in my family!  Here are some pics of our day:

Fred and Knox
Fred and his dad after lunch
My grandfather and I after dinner
Unfortunately, my mom and dad were out of town; so, we'll have to celebrate with him later.
I hope you got to spend the day with the men you love!

An today is my brother's 12th birthday! Happy Birthday, Willie!

Denim Darling

Hallelujah it's Friday!  I've been wanting to say that since Sunday! :)

I was recently shopping and I noticed how "in" denim shirts are this year.  I've always had an inner battle with myself about wearing a denim shirt.  Something about it just makes me always think of "prison" wear.  You know what I'm talking about...

But after some time "researching" on Pinterest, I decided that I actually kind of like the denim shirt look.

What do you think?  Would you do a denim shirt?

Thursday Training: Motivation

One of my friends texted me telling me that I needed to check out Hey Runner Girl

So, I did.  And I'm in LOVE.

Here's just a little taste of what you'll find...

So funny and true.  Ryan Gosling can help me prep for a run anytime.  :)

Now, if that's not motivation and encouragement, I don't know what is.

Enjoy.

(Book Review} Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

As I mentioned last week, I bought some books to start my summer reading.

The first book I chose was Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?  I chose it mainly based on the recs from readers and friends that I received.
Like everyone said, this book was hilarious. She kept me in stitches most of the time.  I love her openness about her awkward years and about the majority of her life.  I think each of us could relate to her in one way or another.

She talks about her upbringing, school years, struggling as a writer and the years she's spent writing for The Office.  The girl is brilliant.  I only wish I could be that witty.

She's just like a regular thirty something year old woman and not some stuck up Hollywood type.  I think we could be best friends. Seriously.  I sometimes wondered if I was reading my own writing.

If you want something light and funny, this is the book to read!

Gotta Get It Done

Although my 30th birthday is now 6 months away, I found this fun little article about 10 things every woman should have by the age of 30.  And I wanted to see just how close I was to crossing these off of my list.
Here's what you should have accomplished or attained on your journey to 30:

1. A decent piece of furniture not previously owned by a friend or family member.
Check.  A few years ago, we purchased 2 arm chairs.  I love these chairs.

2. A small circle of friends you can trust with anything.
Check.  I've never been one to have a million friends, but I am surrounded by a small circle of wonderful people.

3. The knowledge of whether you want to have children or not.
Check.  I think we all know the answer to this.

4. Something impractical and expensive that you bought for yourself just because you wanted it.
To Do.  I buy small things for myself, but maybe I'll splurge on a designer purse or jewelry just for moi!

5. A great resume.
Check.  Since I've been at my current job almost 8 years, I don't think I need one, but you never know.

6. A daily routine for your beauty needs.
Check.  The amount of products have increased through the years, but I'll keep throwing my pennies into the fountain of youth.

7. An exercise plan that you stick to for fitness, health, and long-term maintenance.
Check.  Running and Pure Barre.  Two of my great loves.

8. One stamp in your passport.
Check.  We love to travel and can't wait to collect more.

9. A past filled with juicy stories to tell in your old age.
Check.  No comment.

10. Control of your finances and a savings account you add money to each month.
Check. Check. Check.

I must say that I am proud of my accomplishments thus far.  Maybe turning 30 in 6 months won't be so bad after all.

How did you add up?

Home Bodies

Happy Monday!

Our weekend really got kicked off Thursday night when we went to the Civil Twilight and Young the Giant show. Fred is a fan of both and I somehow won us backstage passes after the show via Twitter. But what we didn't know was that we actually got to get on their tour bus. Young the Giant was super cool and it was an experience.
On the bus:
The rest of the weekend certainly didn't match the excitement of Thursday night.  We still have repair people coming in and out constantly and it feels like we're always waiting in a 4-hour call window.

But to pre-occupy my time, my books came in and I got a head start.
When someone wasn't here, we were lazy! And if you know us, you know lazy days around the Smithwick house are far and few between.  We're always up to something.

Here's proof (love this pic because this is how we wake up every morning):
In the middle of all of our home repairs from the lightning, we decided to switch from cable to satellite.  So the majority of Saturday afternoon was spent catching up on all of the Real Housewives episodes I've missed since for some reason we didn't get Bravo.

And Saturday night, I had to do something I'd never done.  We watched Fried Green Tomatoes.  I feel like I was cheated out of my Southern girl heritage by not watching this.  You definitely must watch!  It's a great movie!
And what better way to end a lazy weekend than to catch the first episode of True Blood (season 5)? Oh, how I've missed it!

So, what did you do this weekend?

Thursday Training: Weight Loss

A lot of you have asked me if I have lost weight since I started running and the answer is...

YES.

I've lost a total of 7 pounds since I began running in January.
Honestly, my clothes are a little looser, but I can't tell a difference in pounds.  I really see it more in inches.  With the running and weight training (Pure Barre), I've noticed the biggest difference in my triceps, abdomen, and thighs.  Three of my biggest problem areas are now a little more toned than they were 6 months ago. And that makes me smile.

Now, I am not self-conscious to wear shorts or tank tops.

Eating is my biggest issue.  I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas and I love fried food.  I tried to cut back, but not as much as I had liked.  I think if I had more self-control over what I ate, I would have seen more results.

I started slacking and quit using the My Fitness Pal app on my phone because I didn't want to read how many pieces of pizza I actually ate.  I've now decided to get back on the bandwagon and hopefully I can do a little better this time around.

I didn't start this journey to just lose weight.  I started it to live a healthier lifestyle.
