Do Oranges Have More Fun???

On Tuesday, I went for my annual fall hair appointment.  Before going, I knew I wanted this same look (blonde on top with a darker bottom for fall). I did want to change it up a bit and make the top a little lighter (Carrie Underwood-ish), but something went horribly wrong because I do NOT look like this.
I look like this.  Not happy.  See exhibits.
Exhibit one:  Do you see my hairline?  It's white!
Exhibit two:  Do you see orange?  I do.  I told her when I left the salon that I saw orange, but she said it was the light and that it would fade.

I came home, washed it in violet shampoo and it was still orange.  I called back and she said it would fade.  Ok, let's try this again.
I washed it.  Still orange.
I called back and I am getting it fixed this morning.  Hopefully, I'll leave with beautiful blonde locks and this orange phase will all be a dream.

Have you ever had a hair nightmare??

Thursday Training: The 1/2 Marathon Plan

It's no lie that I'm training for a 1/2 marathon. Well, actually two of them.  And the first part of the plan is not to die.  But, the second part is a little more structured and planned.

When I first started on this 1/2 marathon journey, I really never thought I'd do it.  It was a brilliant stupid idea I had one night.  I never thought I'd really be training for it until the months started passing and the road race series I'd signed up for was getting to that point.  Things really got real when I ran 7 miles a few weeks back, then 8 miles and so on....

A few months ago, I looked up and printed off this 1/2 marathon training schedule.  This was my first time attempting such a thing and I had no clue where to start.  I started trying to follow it and it's really helped.  I don't follow it to a "T" every week, but I try.

For example, two weeks ago I needed to run the Cooper Young 4-miler on Friday so that moved my long run to Sunday.  I have to juggle a few things around this week because of my schedule, but I make sure that I am getting in my two 4 mile runs and my long 9 mile run as well as my rest days and Pure Barre.  You do what you have to do.

Week Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
1 Rest 2 mi Rest 2.5 mi Rest 3 mi 20-30 min EZ run or cross-train
2 Rest 2 miles Rest 3 mi CT or Rest 4 mi 20-30 min EZ run or cross-train
3 Rest 2.5 mi CT 3 mi Rest 5 mi 20-30 min EZ run or cross-train
4 Rest 3 mi CT 4 mi Rest 6 mi 20-30 min EZ run or cross-train
5 Rest 3 mi CT 3 mi Rest 7 mi 30 min EZ run or cross-train
6 Rest 4 mi CT 4 mi Rest 8 mi 30 min EZ run or cross-train
7 Rest 4 mi Rest 4 mi CT 9 mi 30 min EZ run or cross-train
8 Rest 4 mi CT 3 mi Rest 10 mi 30 min EZ run or cross-train
9 Rest 5 mi CT 4 mi Rest 11 mi Rest
10 30 min EZ run or cross-train 4 mi Rest 3 mi CT 12 mi 30 min EZ run or cross-train
11 Rest CT Rest 3 mi CT 5 mi 30 min EZ run or cross-train
12 Rest 2 mi 20 minutes Rest 20 minutes Race Day! Rest Day!

If you ever get the idea to run a 1/2 marathon, I highly recommend this plan. It's gotten me more than halfway through and I am almost ready to see the end results!

Wine Down Wednesday

Thank you all for commenting yesterday!  I had so much fun "meeting" new bloggers and catching up with friends.  I hope you enjoyed it as well.

Since it's been a busy week, I came home from a dinner with an old friend and had a much needed glass of wine.  That got me thinking about some of my favorite wines.

When I first stared drinking wine, I became a fan of the white wines, especially chardonnay.  To this day, my go-to wine is a chardonnay, but I do have my two favorites:

Barefoot Chardonnay
Toasted Head Chardonnay

One day, I got adventurous and decided to branch out and try Riesling.  I'm not sure if it was because of the fruitier tastes or what, but I fell in love.  These two have quickly become my favorites:

Relax Riesling
Polka Dot Riesing

I've never really been a fan of red wine.  I think it started when I traveled across Europe after college and we stayed at a French chateau and winery.  The winery specialized in red wine, so I decided to indulge.  Bad idea.  My first sip was after a good long walk uphill, in the blazing sun while carrying a picnic without water.  I vowed never to drink red wine again.

It wasn't until a friend of mine, and avid Chardonnay drinker, told me how much he enjoyed  Firesteed Pinot Noir that I decided to give reds another try. And to my surprise, I actually really enjoyed it.
Fred and I were heading out to dinner one night and the place we were going was BYOB, so we stopped to grab a bottle of wine. They did not carry Firesteed and the manager suggested we try Irony Pinot Noir. Since then, I've gone back and forth between the two.
What are some of your favorite wines?

Who Are You?

Happy Tuesday!  Is this week over?  I have so much going on that I can't hardly breathe.  Well, that's a lie because I can breathe, but between planning a golf tournament, 1/2 marathon training, work and life in general, I'm brain dead today.

So, I'm stealing this little idea from my friend and fellow doxie mom, Tamara at T Times Three.

I get on here and tell you all about the lives of the Smithwick's, but now I want you to tell me about you! Don't be shy.  This will be painless and fun!  Here's what I want to know:

Who are you?

Do you blog, too? Leave me your link!  I want to follow you!

Do you remember how you found my blog? A link-up? Another blog?

How long have you been reading?

What keeps you coming back to my blog?
What would you like to see me blog about more?

What is something we have in common?

Tell me a fun fact about yourself!
If you don't feel like answering all of them, don't.  Just leave me a happy note letting me know who you are!  I can't wait to hear from all of you.

Glamour Squad

Happy Monday!  With a crazy, hectic week ahead, I needed a weekend of total relaxation.

Since I stayed in "lounge wear" or what some would call pajama-like clothing for the majority of the weekend, I declared myself part of the Fashion Police for the Emmys.  That qualifies me, right?

I have to say that I absolutely love all of the color the ladies brought to the red carpet this year!  Yellow, emerald and cobalt blue all made a gorgeous appearance!

And then there were these ladies who brought out the most fun and flirty dresses.  Julianne's color is perfect for her.  Sofia really looks like a mermaid!  And Zoe is just cute as a button.  Beautiful.

Some of my other favorites included these two little black numbers from Giuliana and Katy (never thought Kathy would be a best dressed)  and Hayden's gorgeous wrap dress!

My favorite look of the night:
Padma looked stunning in orange.  The cut and color of the dress are just perfect for her skin type.  A+++

My least favorite look:
This fashion police needs to turn herself in!  Kelly, purple hair is not cute!

What were some of your favorite hits and misses of the evening?

Color Me Jeans

I drank the Kool-aid and recently bought some colored jeans (pink and mustard).  Honestly, I couldn't wait to wear them.  For someone who wears jeans all of the time, this is a perfect way to spice up my wardrobe.

I call them my happy pants:
After my purchase, I hit up Pinterest for some mix and matching ideas for my jeans and these are some of the pictures I love the most:

Now, I really wish I would have bought some plum and blue jeans after finding these pics. Perhaps I will soon.  Do you have any colored jeans you love?

Le Bebe: The Psychological Pregnancy

When you're adopting, things are quite different than they would be if I was pregnant. There are obvious things like the growing belly, but there's a sort of psychological pregnancy that comes with adoptive families.

Many adoptive families usually don't know when to expect the baby and don't know what gender they're expecting.  It could be a month or two or it could be a year.  Our agency quotes couples 3-12 months for a match with a baby.

This makes it quite hard to have friends and families host showers or for parents to know when to start making room for baby.  And some people will tell you to wait until the baby comes, while others encourage you to start getting ready right away.  This is where the psychological pregnancy comes in to play  BIG time.

Fred and I decided that we want to experience the same things that all expectant parents go through by diving right in and surrounding ourselves in all things baby.  Not only are we currently designing the nursery, but we're also taking advantages of sales on baby items.

Last week, Target had a MAJOR sale on tons of baby items and I took full advantage.  My car seriously looked like the entire baby section of Target threw up in it!  We got some great "going to need at some point" stuff  and saved a ton of money in the long run.
Little by little, we're hunting and gathering for Baby S.  And sooner or later, we'll be ready!

Mid-Week Gushing

This week has been a great week so far.  And it's just Wednesday.  Let's just hope this trend keeps up!  I like where it's going.

The temps have been a bit cooler which means I've been layering.

I made these yummy BBQ chicken enchiladas last night. Thanks, Jessica, for the recipe.
Kelly introduced me to this song by Lifehouse and Natasha Bedingfield.  Love.
I found these yummy Pop Chips tortilla chips at our local grocery store over the weekend.   The nacho cheese and chili limon are our favorites.
I'll be running in the St. Jude Memphis 1/2 Marathon on December 1, just 11 days before my 30th birthday! I missed the original sale of the race but found someone who was selling her spot.  It's a win/win for both!

I wonder what the second part of the week holds???  How is your week going?

If You Can't Stand the Heat, Get Back in the Kitchen

It's been a while since I cooked. I like to blame it on the summer heat, but really it's just pure lack of motivation.  I got tired of eating out and it wasn't helping my body any either.

So, I decided to get my butt in to gear and I start cooking again.  Here are some of my most recent kitchen quests:

All of these recipes came from some of my favorite bloggers.  And they're all easy.  I only do easy in the kitchen.  I would highly recommend making all of these for your family.

Last night, I did give in to my old ways because I found out the new Panda Express opened and it sounded oh, so good.
Obviously, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, but we both left stuffed.

But tonight, I'll be back in the kitchen and I'm actually really excited!

Life as of Late

Happy Monday!

On Wednesday, Fred and I went to see Mat Kearney and Train in concert. They were playing at this great little outdoor venue by the river and it was just perfect. Let me tell you, Train puts on an AWESOME show.  I've seen them three times in the past three years and it's always high energy!  Mat Kearney was great as well, but I am convinced he was wearing the exact mustard colored pants I bought at Ann Taylor last week!
On Friday night, I decided to run in the Cooper Young 4-miler. It's a fun run through a very eclectic neighborhood.  I saw just about everyone I knew.
I was placed in Wave 1 which is the "fast runners" wave.  I was a little scared because these are the runners who run faster than an 8:59 mile.  I decided that I had to earn my spot and I did.

I finished the 4-miler in 33:45.  This was a new personal best for me.

After the race, Fred and I met up with some friends and went to grab a bite to eat.  After dinner, I made friends with these two.  Um, yeah.  I don't know.
On Saturday, Fred and I headed back down to Cooper Young for the festival with our friend, Josh. This was our first time going and it was a lot of fun.
I even scored this super cute and fun wreath at the festival.
On Sunday, I attended mock recruitment for my sorority.  The did great, but they made me feel OLD when they said they had dance parties with old 90's music like NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.  Reality check for sure!

Overall it was a great weekend!  How was your weekend?

Must See TV

It's that time of year when ALL of television is new again and I couldn't be more excited!

The majority of the nights spent around the Smithwick home involve some sort of tv watching.  It's something we like to do together and we have a LOT of favorite shows.

We recently switched to satellite and between both of our DVRs, we can record up to seven shows at one time.  Now, I know we don't have that much time to watch that much tv, but it does make me excited because I can record anything I want and I don't have to worry about it overlapping.

Here are some of my favorites that are returning or just started back this week:
And here are a few shows I am so excited to start watching:
I hope they're good!

What are you watching this Fall?
