Happy Hallo-Weenie!

Last night, it was beginning to feel a lot like Halloween around the Smithwick house.  I was baking these, Fred was carving a pumpkin and Knox was, of course, supervising.
I started this Halloween morning off with a 6am Pure Barre class. There was no need for a costume that early in the morning since my bed head surely scared everyone.

On my way to home, I stopped by Dunkin Donuts to grab some fun Halloween donuts for my co-workers.  Everyone deserves a little treat on Halloween.
I'm not much of a costume person, but I made sure that I wore my faux Alexander McQueen skull scarf today...
Since we don't really dress up or go out, we'll do our annual Halloween tradition of ordering a pizza and handing out candy to the little trick-or-treaters.  I can't wait to see all of their costumes.

Did you dress up?  Do you have plans for the evening?

Tricks and Yummy Treats

If you're anything like me, you have a sweet tooth the size of Texas.  And it seems like this time of year with all of the Halloween candy, it just multiplies.

I'm convinced that the little "fun size" candy bars have shrunk.  I guess the trick is on us.  I swear if these kids don't come and take the Milky Ways and Snickers away from me soon, I'll weigh a ton.  I can't keep my hands off of them!

Here are some fun and yummy treats that you can make for a Halloween party, kids or even yourself (don't tell, but that's what I do)...

Candy-Coated Caramel Apples
Ghostly Peeps Smores - I was disappointed that I could NOT find ghost peeps anywhere.  Where are these silly ghosts hiding?

If you want to feel like you're eating something that's not so bad for you because it has fruit in it, try these goodies...

Snickers Salad

Do you feel 10lbs heavier just looking at these?

Do you make any special Halloween treats?

Girls Night Out

I feel like I've been a little MIA from Twitter, Instagram and other forms of social media this weekend, but the Junior League of Memphis' Merry Marketplace was this weekend and that's where I've been spending the majority of my time.

My busy weekend started Thursday with my mom and I enjoying some girl time at the Merry Marketplace Morning.  We've both  been so busy that it was good for us to spend some time together and enjoying one of our favorite past times.  I also wanted to get in a little shopping of my own before I had to work.

My placement for Junior League this year was Merry Marketplace Girls Night Out event.  The event was held Friday night and it's a fun time for everyone to shop, eat and drink with their best girlfriends.  I think this year's Girls Night Out was amazing and went off without a hitch!
We had a wonderful group of hostesses for this year's event!
We even had a little fun photo booth!
We had local restaruants donate some of their signature goodies for the event.
And last, but certainly not least, we had the girls night out cocktails flowing!

I was so proud to be a part of this placement.  Our chair was on point the entire time and she made it not only a success, but also fun!  Also, the women on my committee were super sweet and great to work with.  Ok, now back to reality.

Thursday Training: What to Wear

Now that the weather is so iffy, I'm always at a loss on what to wear when I run outside.
This super duper, awesome article from Runner's World, discusses dressing for runs. I've always heard to dress 10-20 degrees warmer outside than what it really is and that's exactly what these experts say:

above 70...lightweith/light-colored singlet and shorts
60 to 69...tank top or singlet and shorts
50 to 59...t-shirt and shorts
40 to 49....long-sleeve shirt and tights or shorts
30 to 39...long-sleeve shirt and tights
20 to 29...two upper-body layers and one lower-body layer
10 to 19...two upper-body layers and one lower-body layer
0 to 9...two/three upper-body layers, one/two lower-body layers
below 0...three upper-body layers, two lower-body layers

I hope this helps you as you get ready to set out on your runs this fall.

Happy running!

Nursery Sneak Peek: Part 1

Let the real fun begin!  As I've mentioned before, Fred and I have decided that we want to start decorating a nursery for our little bundle of joy.  It's hard to believe that we're actually working on a nursery that one precious baby will call home one day (hopefully soon).

Progress on the nursery has been slow and a few of you might have seen this pic of Fred putting a little something together on Instagram (carolinesmithwick) or Twitter a couple of weeks back...
But we just received the customized crib bedding yesterday from Holly and I just couldn't hold a little sneak peak of the bedding in any longer.
This and a cute little computer sketch was all I saw before I placed the order.
I really wanted something that was fun and whimsical.  And since we do not know the sex of the baby, I needed something that was gender neutral.  I found the giraffe fabric on Etsy and contacted Holly about creating bedding to match my vision and she did!  She helped me put all of the colors and shapes together to create this beautiful mix.  I would highly recommend using Holly for any of your bedding needs.

Now it's time to start picking a paint color and finally deciding on some actual furniture (my biggest headache right now) for the nursery!  I promise to keep you updated on the progress!

The Nail Files: Skyfall

I've been looking for a new and fun polish for the fall and I've yet to find one, well, until now.  I saw the OPI James Bond 007 Skyfall Nail Polish Collection (that's a mouthful) at Ulta last night and I'm in love.

I seriously want to try every single color.  It doesn't help that I'm an OPI snob too.  They are perfect for this season and the upcoming holidays.  And whoever came up with the cute little names is a genius or HUGE 007 fan.

I ended up buying Casino Royale and Skyfall.  I am quite pleased with both and I really want to get one of every color.  Is that too much?  Which one(s) do you like?

Out from Under the Weather

Our weekend didn't get off to the best start...
I'm sick.  Between the stupid sinus bug and a tummy bug, I just can't feel better.

I did manage to rally on Friday night for our nephew's 1st birthday party.  We didn't stay long because I didn't want to get anyone else sick.
And we had tickets to go see Mute Math.  Sorry if you were there and I infected you.
The show was awesome and it was so much fun.  They're a great live band and they can really put on a show.  Let's just say there were key-tars, floating mattresses, and lots and lots of confetti involved.
After the show, we came home and went to bed.  I didn't even wake up until almost 11am on Saturday (and that's without drinking the night before).  I managed to rally again to go and get some lunch and to vote, but not much else.
With me being sick, I am lucky enough to have a great husband who got out there and decorated the outside of our house for Halloween!  He knows how much I love my spider and spiderwebs!
Sunday was a bit of the same with resting and filling up on fluids and meds.  I didn't get to run my 10-miler either because I was sick, so I am officially out of the race series.  I'm disappointed, but I know that my health is more important than trying to race.  And there's always next year, but I've got to get better.

So, how was your weekend?

Get on My Feet

As a shoe-a-holic, I feel the need to get a few new pair of shoes every season.  New styles come out.  New trends come out.  And my feet need to look and feel their best.

Here are some of the current looks I am lusting after:

I love the classic look of these flats.
I know they're the "Ugg"-liest shoes on the planet, but they are so comfy.

I'm really trying to like the smoking flat/loafer look and I think I could handle these.

And how cute would these be with skinny jeans and a plain top?

Are there any shoes you're lusting after right now?

The Hard Truth

I am not a patient person.  It's probably the thing I like least about myself.  And with trying to start a family and our adoption, my patience is constantly tested.
I always have to remind myself to put my faith in God and His timing.  I need to always remember that every little thing is going to be alright no matter the outcome.
I need to remember that on my worst days, there are those who are far worse off than I am.
I was once told by someone these exact words...
Those words spoke volumes and have stuck with me over the years.  I have a great life, family, and friends and I need to sometimes "stop and smell the roses"

.  And as we continue to wait and I continue to work on my patience skills, I will...

What to Wear Wednesday

It’s officially fall in Tennessee!  The temps are dropping and the leaves are changing.  I love summer, but this time of year is beginning to become a very, close second.  I'm actually ready to break out my fall clothes. Summer is officially behind us and my scarves and boots are screaming to be worn.

I think the scarf is the easiest accessory for the fall. My go to outfit for fall is  plain shirt, jeans and boots with a fun scarf.  It's an effortless, simple, sophisticated look while staying warm.

There are so many patterns out there and so many different variations of the scarf.  I know that none of mine are exactly the same.  I love wearing them, but it's hard to figure out how to wear them in all of the various ways...

Check out this video of 25 ways to wear a scarf.  Not only is it informative, but it's super cute!
Now, let's all go out and buy cute scarves!

DIY: The Crayon Melt

By now, you know that some of my great ideas come from Pinterest.  That's a lie, they all do.  Well, this crafty project is no different.

I saw this crayon melt a few months ago and it looked so simple and fun.  I finally remembered to get a pack of crayons at the store and decided to make this creation my own.
my version...

I made mine a little different because I wanted the colors to mix and overlap.  I'm not sure where I'm going to hang this, but I think it will be great for a future playroom or even nursery decoration.

This craft would be great for kids to help make.  It seriously took about 10 minutes to do it all.  The crayons melt and dry quick!

Have you tried this?
